The Design Manager position provides leadership in designs for HCA’s Capital Projects. It has a great deal of interaction with hospital CEO’s, COO’s and the remainder of the hospital departmental leadership. There is oversight of 20-30 projects on an ongoing basis with project sizes varying from $5 million to $100 million in construction value and occasionally those under $5 million.
Responsibility includes managing designs to budget, schedule, and works closely with the financial group, the corporate clinical services group, corporate real estate and the strategic planning group. The manager is expected to possess a thorough understanding of strategies designed specifically for HCA and apply them in all projects.
Perform Architect and Consultant evaluation, recommendations and selection.
Monitor architect’s schedule and quality control process.
Ensure projects are designed in a successful manner, within budget, within schedule, with a high degree of quality and complies with approved scope.
Ensure design coordination between the HCA Planner, Design Manager, Medical Equipment Manager, IT&S and Telecom Manager and the HCA Construction Manager.
Review budget during design process relative to corporate approved budget and project scope to determine and verify if the established objectives of the project can be attained within the corporate approved budget.
Routinely visit hospitals to monitor quality of designer’s performance and ensure that designs are meeting the needs of the facilities.
Meet with state and local authorities to represent the company’s interest on project scope, design issues and code issues, appealing to local jurisdiction as necessary.
Implementation of sustainability strategies.
Conduct post occupancy reviews/interviews with end users for designs and standards are being conducted on all completed projects.
Implement and manage various initiatives designed to enhance process and improve cost.
Assist with the overall departmental goals of cost reductions in design and construction capital spend.
Participate on Boards or review committees that support the overall goals of HCA.
Maintain relationships with the hospital and division leadership.
Prepare CON drawings and required documentation to facilitate CON submittals.
Assist with management of local facility projects as needed if requested by division leadership.
Extensive healthcare planning and design experience with working knowledge in varying healthcare service lines.
Demonstrated experience in leadership and ability to lead/manage a group of professionals and a group of designers.
Ability to work collaboratively as a part of a team and be self-motivated.
Travel required; approximately one-two nights away from home per week.
7-10 years of healthcare architectural experience with Owner experience preferable
