A Tribute to Thomas E. Batey, AIA Emeritus
Tom Batey was a treasured member and leader of the Middle Tennessee architecture community, and his presence will be deeply missed.
Thomas E. Batey, 85, went to be with his Lord March 28, 2017 at his home in Maryville, Tennessee. He was born on the family farm in Smyrna, Tennessee to James and Maggie Jordan Batey, who preceded him in death. He attended Lipscomb University and earned an architecture degree from Georgia Tech before serving in the U.S. Corps of Engineers. He joined Hospital Corporation of America in 1969, beginning a twenty year career that would include living with his family abroad both in Saudi Arabia and Australia. After retirement, he served as Chairman of the Board at Lipscomb University, served on the board at Lakeshore, and served as an elder at Hillsboro Church of Christ, the role he cherished the most.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ben Batey; and sisters, Margaret Batey, Ann Batey Whitley, and Sue Batey Baker. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 56 years, Bonnie Tucker Batey, who shared his love of family and adventure. He is also survived by a sister, Evelyn Batey Sigmund of Lake Charles, LA; daughter, Carol Ann Batey Hudson of Nashville; son, Scott (Gini) Batey of Knoxville; grandchildren, Tim (Krista) Wells of McMinnville, Lauren Wells of Nashville, Jack Batey, and Holly Batey of Knoxville; and great-grandchildren, Jena Grissom, Alexa Wells, and Clayton Foster.
