Local Architects Recognized with 2018 AIA Middle TN Design Awards

2018 People's Choice Winner - Florida Hospital Apopka - ESa


NASHVILLE, TN – AIA Middle Tennessee, A Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced the winners of the 2018 Design Awards to honor exceptional work on the behalf of the architecture profession and bring awareness to the great work that architects are doing in our communities.

The 2018 AIA Middle Tennessee Design Awards recognizes the following architecture firms:

Honor Award:

  • the architect workshop for City of Murfreesboro Police Headquarters
  • Woodson Gilchrist Architects for Archer Street Residence
  • Manuel Zeitlin Architects, LLC for Valor Collegiate Academies
  • ESa + JE Dunn for JE Dunn Office Adaptive Reuse
  • Southeast Venture for Vanderbilt Dialysis Clinic
  • Hastings and TMPartners, PLLC for Nashville Family Safety Center & Police Headquarters

Merit Award:

  • Gresham Smith for Lifeway Christian Resources Corporate Headquarters
  • ESa for Holy Trinity Montessori
  • ESa for Florida Hospital Apopka

Citation Award:

  • Manuel Zeitlin Architects, LLC for RePublic High School
  • Centric Architecture for Restoration of Carter House Farm Office

People’s Choice Award:

  • ESa for Florida Hospital Apopka

A jury of AIA Detroit members judged the entries. Jury members were: Russell Baltimore, AIA, Darin Daguanno, AIA, Ryan Mason, Assoc. AIA, Michael Poris, AIA, and Gina VanTine, AIA. The jury stated “One notable theme stood out to the jury that is particularly important that seems to be a very telling model for future developments and design across the United States… It was refreshing – and exciting – to see the creative transformations of mundane former medical, retail and warehouse spaces into design forward spaces that capitalize on the potential afforded by these structures.”

Projects are entered under three categories: small, large, small healthcare design, large healthcare design, or unbuilt. The jury was encouraged to recognize and acknowledge exceptional design in the categories of Citation, Merit, and Honor, with Honor being the highest award

The 2018 AIA Middle TN Design Awards Celebration was held in Nashville at City Winery with 150 people in attendance. The Design Awards Committee was led by Chair, Ali Alsaleh, Associate AIA of Smith Gee Studio and Board Liaison, Lee David, AIA of Earl Swensson Associates.




AIA Middle Tennessee is a medium sized AIA family of over 750 architects, interns, and allied industry members located in a 35-county region in Middle Tennessee. The mission of AIA Middle Tennessee is to be the resource elevating the profession and promoting quality design.
