About the Program
Black Spectacles was founded in Chicago in 2010 by Marc Teer, a practicing architect at Gensler and Assistant Adjunct Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology. After seeing his colleagues and students struggling to nd resources to support their interest in learning design software, Marc brought together architects and designers practicing at the world’s most in uential rms from across the country to lend their professional expertise in design software, so that architects can learn the tools and work ows necessary to develop design work at the highest level.
In 2013 Black Spectacles expanded its offering and partnered with AIA Chicago & Mike Newman to launch an online curriculum for architects to prepare for the Architect Registration Exam. Based on workshops AIA Chicago had been hosting for decades, Black Spectacles built an entirely new curriculum focusing on all 7 multiple choice and vignette sections of the exam.
In 2015 Black Spectacles partnered with AIA National to offer our ARE Prep curriculum to architects across the country, and re-branded it as the “AIA ARE Prep powered by Black Spectacles”. Black Spectacles is the world’s rst and only online learning resource built speci cally for architects and designers.
About The Courses
The AIA ARE Prep Curriculum includes over 40 hours of video tutorials covering all seven sections of the ARE, including the multiple choice questions and vignettes. Courses are taught by practicing architects working at world-class rms-not trainers, so you get a real-world perspective from practitioners who are working on the world’s most sophisticated architecture. And all of the tutorials are viewable on-demand, on any device with an internet connection, anywhere in the world- so you can learn what you want, when you want.
AIA MidTN selected three ARE 4.0 exams to kick off our ARE Prep Program: Construction Documents & Services, Programming, Planning & Practice, and Site Planning & Design. For our second session be- ginning in April 2017, we will offer two simultaneous classes. An ARE 4.0 class will be available for those continuing to test in ARE 4.0, and an ARE 5.0 class will be available for those transitioning to ARE 5.0. The ARE 4.0 class will cover Building Design and Construction Systems, Building Systems, Structural Systems, and Schematic Design. The ARE 5.0 class will cover Project Planning & Design and Project Development & Documentation. Please note that once you have transitioned to ARE 5.0 you can no longer sit for ARE 4.0 exams. ARE 4.0 exams will be discontinued on June 30, 2018.
