AIA+2030 Professional Series Session

AIA Middle Tennessee, a Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, is taking tangible steps toward meeting the Challenge, and reaching that goal. One of those steps is creating the AIA+2030 Professional Series, a 10-part series of intermediate-level professional development courses designed to provide specific ways to make our built environment energy-efficient.

The 2030 Challenge: Setting + Achieving Energy Goals with Intergrated Design

Steve McDowell, FAIA LEED AP, Principal | Director of Design, BNIM

As Director of Design, Steve leads studio directors, associates and designers at every level to produce architecture that celebrates site, environment, technical exploration and the joy of human life. His originality is creating a new definition of architectural practice in his city and across the country. Above all, he motivates others to go beyond their expectations. His design approach focuses on the space between buildings, the use of innovative materials and technology, and how to serve end users best. As a practitioner of holistic design, Steve looks at the totality of a space, its interior and exterior, and how this symbiotic relationship interests the user.

With his workplace functioning as a laboratory, he is instituting a practice that is founded on collaboration, with virtually no boundaries to peer critique, open exchange of ideas and free initiative.

His unique way of harnessing creativity within the firm’s projects has caused him to push the envelope of technical investigation. Steve’s leadership by design is setting new ground in cutting-edge projects at the University of Georgia, the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and the North Charleston Noisette Community Development in South Carolina, just to name a few.

Peter Rumsey, P.E., FASHRAE, Managing Director, Integral Group

Widely recognized as global player in energy efficiency, and a leader in sustainable and resource efficient building design, Peter has worked in the engineering and energy consulting industry since the mid 1980s. As Managing Director of Integral Group (formerly Rumsey Engineers), Peter has directed the design of 13 LEED Platinum Certified projects and 9 LEED Gold Certified projects; as well as 18 LEED Platinum, 10 Net Zero and 3 Living Building Challenge projects, which are currently in-design. Peter has been responsible for many key innovations in energy efficient design and analysis, including pioneering the use of chilled beams (induction diffusers), efficient outside air systems that eliminate reheat, radiant cooling systems, and low pressure drop systems in U.S. laboratories; and the use of guaranteed performance contracts for HVAC systems based solely on measured system data. Above and beyond design, one of his major areas of innovation is making green affordable .

Driven to transform building practices by creating prominent examples of green buildings that are affordable and practical, Peter has paved the path for many sustainable “firsts,” in the design of efficient HVAC systems for academic and commercial buildings, laboratories, cleanrooms, and data centers, domestically and internationally. Under Peter’s direction, the Integral Group team has designed the nation’s first Net Zero commercial office building , IDeAs Z Squared; the first LEED Platinum rating for a laboratory in a historic building , Caltech Linde + Robinson Lab for Global Environmental Science; the first LEED Platinum Pre-certified data center in the world for Advanced Data Centers; the first Net Zero Lab in the country, J. Craig Venter Institute Laboratory; the first LEED Gold microchip manufacturing plant , Texas Instruments RFAB; the high-profile greening of the The Empire State Building ; Advanced Energy Buildings for Infosys in India ; and currently, the team is working on what is expected to be the largest Zero Energy public building in the U.S. , the Exploratorium Museum.

Peter’s passion for energy efficient and sustainable design issues has led him to publish widely on HVAC energy efficiency. He has contributed to many publications, including Environmental Design + Construction magazine, ASHRAE Journal, Plumbing Engineer magazine, Plant Services magazine, and Cleanrooms magazine. Furthermore, Peter enjoys sharing his commitment to sustainability through speaking engagements at industry events, including USGBC’s GreenBuild, PG&E’s Pacific Energy Center, Labs21, and Cleanrooms West, as well as serving as a Lecturer at Stanford University, where he teaches a weekly course covering advanced topics in Integrated, Energy-Efficient Building Design.

Peter received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley; he is a Professional Engineer, Registered in 15 States; Certified Energy Manager; Senior Fellow at the Rocky Mountain Institute; and ASHRAE Fellow.

Joe Keal, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP

Joe Keal has 10 years of experience as a key team member and project leader for several high-profile projects in the Midwest and throughout the US. Joe’s involvement in numerous high-performance, deeply sustainable projects has placed him on the front lines of the industry’s most progressive emerging technologies and methodologies for design, sustainable solutions, process and delivery. Joe served as an integral team member for several LEED Platinum projects in Greensburg, KS, and he is currently a senior team member for a net zero camp facility in West Virginia, for which all associated buildings are being designed to Living Building standards.

Since 2008, Joe has served as a part-time faculty member for the University of Kansas School of Architecture, Design and Planning, where his instruction largely is focused upon the use of digital design tools and sustainable design practices.

Joe holds both a Master and Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Kansas.

About Integral Group:
Integral Group is an interactive global network of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and energy engineers collaborating under a single deep green engineering umbrella.
Indeterminacies - Stan Link

Indeterminacies introduces new, compelling music to our audiences and invites them to dissect both the music and their relationship to it. We bring in local and regional composers and performers along with writers, philosophers, and critics, mix in a curious audience, stir things up and see what happens.

The title, Indeterminacies, is borrowed from a beautiful musical idea posited by the composer John Cage. Indeterminate structures are processes that are carefully designed, but have unpredictable end results. They are wondrous experiments let loose in the world to wreak havoc or create intense beauty as they will.
